Mathematical Success, Resilience and Challenge Across the Year
As we move towards the end of another successful academic year, there is much to celebrate within the Maths department. While we have faced some challenges along the way, the resilience, commitment and teamwork shown by staff and students have ensured that high standards of teaching and learning have been maintained throughout.
Supporting Excellence in Mathematics
One of the department's greatest challenges this year has been securing a full-time Maths teacher since February. We are extremely grateful to Mr Dave and Ms Chaudry, who have provided valuable support by teaching affected classes on Thursdays and Fridays alongside their existing commitments.
We have also been fortunate to secure an experienced long-term supply teacher to support the department from Monday to Wednesday. Their expertise has helped ensure continuity for students and enabled us to maintain the quality of education our learners deserve.
Looking ahead, we are delighted to welcome a new member of the Maths department in September. We look forward to formally introducing her to our school community when she joins us.
Exam Preparation and Support
It has been particularly pleasing to see our Year 11 and Year 13 students working with determination and focus as they approach the end of their examination courses. Attendance at lessons, intervention sessions and after-school support has been excellent, and students have approached their revision with maturity and commitment.
Feedback following the first examinations has been positive, and staff will continue to provide support throughout the remainder of the exam period. Students have been reminded of the help available to them and know how to access support whenever required.
Outstanding UKMT Junior Maths Challenge Results
On 29 April, 40 students from Years 7 and 8 proudly represented the school in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Many of these students had been attending weekly Maths Challenge enrichment sessions since September, demonstrating outstanding commitment to developing their mathematical skills beyond the classroom.
We are delighted to report another year of excellent results, with 26 students receiving awards for their achievements.
The medal tally was:
• Gold: 1
• Silver: 11
• Bronze: 15
In addition, one student achieved an exceptional score and has qualified for the next stage of the competition, the Junior Kangaroo.
We congratulate all medal winners and commend every student who participated for their enthusiasm, effort and dedication.
Year 11 Update
As students prepare for their calculator examinations after the half-term break, we encourage them to regularly check their class MS Teams pages, where teachers have shared revision guidance and recommended topics for study.
Parents and carers are also asked to ensure that calculators are fully functioning and ready for use ahead of the upcoming examinations.
Year 10 End-of-Year Assessments
Year 10 students will sit their End-of-Year Maths assessment in June. Revision lists have already been shared via MS Teams, with the assessment date to be confirmed shortly.
We are also pleased that a small group of students has been selected to participate in Further Maths GCSE Enrichment sessions after school on Tuesdays. This additional qualification provides an exciting opportunity for students to extend their mathematical knowledge and challenge themselves beyond the standard GCSE curriculum.
Developing Independent Learners Through Flipped Learning
Many classes have been taking part in Flipped Learning activities throughout the year. This innovative approach encourages students to research content independently and prepare mini-lessons for their peers, supported by guidance from their teacher.
By placing greater responsibility for learning in students' hands, Flipped Learning helps develop independence, confidence and deeper understanding. Students are encouraged to explore topics in greater detail, create resources and communicate mathematical concepts clearly to others.
The approach also strengthens presentation skills, promotes collaboration and gives students a greater voice in their learning. It has been encouraging to see students embrace these opportunities and grow in confidence as mathematicians and communicators.
We would like to thank students, families and staff for their continued support throughout the year and look forward to celebrating further successes in the months ahead.
