MFL Thought of the Term

"Learning a language: because talking to yourself gets boring eventually."

It has been another lively and productive term in the Modern Foreign Languages department, with students across all year groups developing their confidence, creativity and communication skills in French and Spanish. Through a variety of engaging topics, students have continued to expand their vocabulary, improve their grammatical understanding and build their ability to express themselves in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Year 7

Year 7 students have been learning how to talk about their homes and local areas, describing where they live and discussing the facilities and places found in their towns. Alongside building key vocabulary, they have begun constructing more detailed sentences and developing greater confidence in using the language independently.

Next term, students will move on to the topic of school life, learning to discuss the subjects they study and express their opinions with reasons. This will help them communicate with greater accuracy while adding more personality to their responses.

Year 8

Year 8 students have completed their topic on Holidays, where they have learned to describe trips they have taken in the past as well as holidays they would like to take in the future. This has provided valuable opportunities to practise a range of tenses and develop more descriptive language.

They are now beginning a new topic on Food and Healthy Living. Students will discuss their diets, favourite and least favourite foods and eating habits. As the topic progresses, they will also have the opportunity to design their own restaurant menus, combining creativity with practical language skills.

Year 9

Year 9 students have continued exploring invitations and excuses, learning how to form questions and use key verbs to accept or decline invitations appropriately. This work has strengthened their understanding of sentence structure and helped develop their conversational language skills.

Following half term, students will begin their first GCSE-style content through the theme of Celebrity Culture. They will learn to talk about the lives of famous people and discuss individuals they admire, providing an exciting introduction to GCSE study.

Year 10

Year 10 students have recently completed their GCSE topic on Holidays, consolidating their understanding of past, present and future tenses. They have also completed their first round of mock examinations, demonstrating considerable effort, resilience and determination throughout the process.

Students have now begun studying Education and Work, where they will compare school life in Britain with education systems in France and Spain. They will also explore career opportunities and discuss the skills and qualities required for different professions.

Year 11 GCSE Examinations

We would like to congratulate all Year 11 students on successfully completing their speaking examinations and thank them for the hard work they have shown throughout the examination period.

Upcoming examination dates are as follows:

• French Writing – Thursday 4 June at 1.30pm
• Spanish Reading and Listening – Tuesday 9 June at 9.00am
• Spanish Writing – Tuesday 16 June at 9.00am

We would also like to recognise those students studying additional GCSE qualifications in languages including Urdu, Chinese, Arabic, Polish and Punjabi. Their dedication to maintaining and developing their multilingual skills alongside their other subjects is a fantastic achievement.

Supporting GCSE Revision

As students continue preparing for their examinations, we encourage them to make full use of the revision resources available to them, including:

• BBC Bitesize for grammar support and tense practice
• AQA Past Papers for exam-style questions and practice
• French and Spanish MS Teams pages for vocabulary lists, class resources and revision materials

Celebrating Languages and Cultural Understanding

Learning a language is about much more than vocabulary and grammar. It develops confidence, communication skills, cultural awareness and resilience. We are proud of the progress students have made this term and look forward to seeing them continue to grow as linguists in the months ahead.

We wish all students every success for the remainder of the term and encourage them to continue embracing the opportunities that language learning provides.
