On Sunday 11 May, The Langley Academy Rowing Club travelled to Dorney Lake to compete in the Ball Cup South Regatta 2026. The event featured a competitive racing format, with the fastest six crews from the heats progressing to the finals, while most competitors had the opportunity to race in two separate events across the day.

Despite extremely challenging weather conditions, including strong winds that led to several early race incidents and changes to the competition schedule, Langley's rowers demonstrated resilience, determination and impressive composure throughout the event.

Strong Performances in Difficult Conditions

The day began with single sculling events, where Tomasz produced The Langley Academy's fastest performance of the regatta. Competing in the Open J16 Single Scull, he finished second in his heat behind the eventual overall winner, securing a place among the fastest six competitors and progressing to the final. Tomasz went on to finish sixth overall in a highly competitive field.

Klaudia competed in a single scull for the first time in the Women's J15 Single Scull event. Despite battling difficult conditions and strong opposition, she showed courage and determination, gaining valuable racing experience and finishing 11th overall.

Weather Impacts Competition Schedule

Shortly after the opening races, a quad crew capsized near the start line, prompting organisers to cancel the J13 and J14 coxed quad events and abandon all finals racing. As a result, heat times alone determined the final standings, meaning crews had only one opportunity to post their fastest performances.

Year 10 Crews Impress

In Division Two, Charlie and Yuvraj competed in the Open Double Scull event, producing the Academy's second-fastest time of the day. Their performance earned sixth place in their heat and 13th overall in a competitive field.

The two Women's J15 Double Scull crews were drawn together in the same race. Zahra and Grace delivered an excellent performance, finishing ahead of teammates Klaudia and Sanjana. The crews placed ninth and tenth overall respectively, with both boats demonstrating strong teamwork and determination throughout their races.

Single Scull Successes

Later in the day, Charlie and Yuvraj returned to the water in single sculls. Racing in the same heat, both athletes produced near-identical performances, with the timing system recording exactly the same finishing time for each rower.

Charlie was awarded eighth overall, with Yuvraj finishing ninth, highlighting the close nature of their performances and the progress both athletes have made this season.

Determination in the Quad Event

The girls later combined with Year 11 cox Alex to compete in a quad scull event. After making a solid start, their race was disrupted when a neighbouring crew veered across their lane, forcing the Langley crew to stop and avoid a collision.

Although the interference cost them valuable momentum, the crew responded admirably and completed the race with determination. They finished fourth in their heat and twelfth overall, demonstrating resilience in difficult circumstances.

Misfortune for Year 11 Boys

The final Langley crew to race was the Year 11 boys' Open J16 Quad Scull in a straight final. Unfortunately, just five strokes into the race, Adam's shoes became detached from the footplate, creating a significant equipment issue that severely impacted the crew's ability to row effectively.

Despite the setback, the crew completed the race and showed admirable perseverance in challenging circumstances.

A Valuable Day of Racing

While the weather, race disruptions and equipment issues presented several obstacles throughout the day, the regatta provided valuable competitive experience for all involved. Students demonstrated excellent resilience, adaptability and sportsmanship, representing The Langley Academy with pride both on and off the water.

Special congratulations go to Tomasz for reaching the Open J16 final and producing the fastest Langley performance of the day, as well as to every athlete who competed under demanding conditions.

The experience gained at Dorney Lake will undoubtedly support the continued development of the squad as they prepare for future regattas and competitions.
