This term, the Hearing Resource Base proudly celebrated Deaf Awareness Week 2026, embracing this year's theme of "Making Connections, Breaking Barriers." Through sport, fundraising and meaningful opportunities to connect with the wider deaf community, students enjoyed a memorable week that highlighted inclusion, confidence and shared experiences.

Inspiring Football Session with Brentford FC Sports Trust

As part of the celebrations, the Hearing Resource Base was delighted to welcome representatives from the Brentford FC Sports Trust, including Deaf Plus Sports Co-ordinator Benjamin and coach Sam, who delivered an engaging and inspiring football session for our students.

Throughout the session, students developed key football skills through a range of technical activities and small-sided games. More importantly, they had the opportunity to build confidence, strengthen teamwork skills and enjoy the positive benefits of sport in a supportive environment.

A huge thank you to Benjamin and Sam for their enthusiasm, expertise and encouragement, which made the experience so enjoyable and memorable for everyone involved.

Fundraising Success

The Hearing Resource Base also demonstrated its commitment to supporting the wider deaf community through a successful fundraising initiative.

Students organised a bake sale that raised an impressive £284.37 for Chloe's and Sophie's Special Ears Fund. We are incredibly proud of the students' efforts and would like to thank everyone who supported the event through donations and purchases.

Building Connections with the Deaf Community

A particular highlight of Deaf Awareness Week was a visit to the Specialist Resource Provision for deaf students at Vyners Secondary School.

For many of our students, this was the first opportunity to meet and interact with deaf peers from outside The Langley Academy's Hearing Resource Base. The visit provided a valuable chance to share experiences, build friendships and celebrate a shared identity within the deaf community.

Students participated in a Deaf Awareness session led by a deaf advocate and took part in a range of activities alongside Vyners students. With 18 students currently attending the Vyners Specialist Resource Provision, the visit created meaningful opportunities for connection, understanding and mutual learning.

Looking Ahead

The visit marked the beginning of what we hope will become a strong and lasting relationship between our two schools. We are excited to welcome students from Vyners to The Langley Academy next term and look forward to continuing to strengthen links within the deaf community.

The Hearing Resource Base remains committed to creating opportunities that promote inclusion, confidence and belonging. Deaf Awareness Week provided a wonderful reminder of the importance of connection, representation and celebrating the unique strengths and experiences of deaf young people.

We are incredibly proud of all the students who took part and represented the Academy so positively throughout the week.
